Essential Functions
The multidisciplinary Digital Communications team at WashU is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the primary public-facing university websites like,,, and Additionally, we created and manage the university’s self-publishing website service called WashU Sites.

Over the past 3+ years, we’ve been working to bring our portfolio up to a standard level of quality that follows university brand standards. We are mostly there, and now, in partnership with a new Digital Creative Director, we are looking for an Interactive Web Designer to help us evolve our portfolio to serve our audiences in the most effective and compelling way possible.

A successful Interactive Web Designer should have a passion for designing web experiences while following the university brand guidelines and utilizing the latest trends in interactive and mobile web design.

• Drive UX strategies and approaches that balance business objectives with customer needs
• Lead brainstorming sessions internally and with campus partners
• Work within multi-disciplinary teams to produce clever ways to address design challenges as well as to evaluate the feasibility of proposed solutions
• Facilitate collaboration and lead definition, direction, and execution of interactive design
• Design user-centered, interactive, mobile-first web designs
• Design user-centered, interactive, mobile-first web designs
• Create documentation and resources (templates, UI kits, etc.) that empower others to implement and extend design systems
• Optimize user experiences through research, testing, and staying up to date on best practices
• Perform other tasks as requested

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5 years of interactive web design experience.
• Experience designing solutions that leverage emergent technologies, consumer electronics and/or mobile devices.
• An exceptional portfolio that showcases solid conceptual design and layout skills. The portfolio should display a solid understanding of web design best practices as well as the ability to craft unique user experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
•Graduate degree in Design Strategy, Interaction Design, Human Computer Interaction or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
•7+ years of interactive web design experience
•Expert-level experience with responsive web design (RWD) and mobile-first strategies
•Experience implementing a range of user research (interviews, contextual inquiry, participatory design, usability testing, card sorting etc.)
•Professional experience creating user interface specifications with appropriate design tools
•Demonstrable problem-solving skills
•Comfortable in a fast-paced environment
•Experience developing prototypes, wireframes, and user flows that effectively communicate design principles and user interface interactions
•Expert level of knowledge of design tools: Photoshop and Illustrator
•High level of accuracy and attention to detail
•Strong communication skills

Applicant Special Instructions:
Office environment. Ability to travel to and from partner meetings at the university; travel to on- and off-campus locations as needed.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
